SMARTSTART brings together universities, educational organizations, and technology partners to prepare a new generation of preschool educators for a world shaped by artificial intelligence. The project develops an innovative 14-week elective course on Machine Learning in Early Childhood Education, practical activity examples for teachers, and a digital learning platform accessible to all partners and participating institutions.
Our mission
To equip early childhood educators and teacher candidates with the knowledge, tools, and practical strategies needed to understand and responsibly integrate Machine Learning in early learning environments. Through innovative training, high-quality resources, and sustainable digital practices, SMARTSTART aims to build a bridge between emerging technologies and the unique needs of preschool children — supporting teachers in creating playful, inclusive, and future-oriented learning experiences.
Our vision
SMARTSTART envisions a future where every preschool teacher is confident, informed, and empowered to guide young children in a world shaped by artificial intelligence. We believe that Machine Learning can be introduced in early childhood through meaningful, age-appropriate, and creative activities that strengthen digital literacy while preserving the human-centered values of education.
What we do
Develop an ML-in-ECE Course – A 14-week elective course for teacher education programs, built around responsible, age-appropriate Machine Learning concepts.
Support Preschool Teachers – Practical classroom activities that introduce ML concepts through play, exploration, and creativity.
Create Digital Learning Tools – Moodle-based learning modules, demonstrations, and resources for teachers and students.
Pilot and Evaluate – Implementation with teacher candidates and preschool teachers to test usability, impact, and engagement.
Promote Sustainable Digital Practices – “No more digital trash” approach — long-term accessible materials integrated into partner websites.
Our team
SMARTSTART is powered by a dedicated consortium of European organisations working together to enhance early childhood education through innovation and technology. Each partner brings unique expertise—from pedagogy and teacher training to digital learning, AI-based tools, and community engagement.
Together, we combine educational experience, research knowledge, and technological insight to create meaningful, accessible, and future-ready learning opportunities for preschool teachers and young learners. Our collaboration ensures that the project’s outcomes are high-quality, sustainable, and relevant across diverse educational contexts.
